How Jonathon Kolb’s Underrated Acquisition is Paying Off for the New York Liberty

Introduction

As the WNBA prepares for another season and navigates the complexities of expansion, few general managers have made as significant an impact as Jonathon Kolb of the New York Liberty. Over six seasons, Kolb has crafted a championship-caliber team, demonstrating a remarkable ability to build from the ground up. Kolb has transformed the Liberty from an underdog into a powerhouse, meticulously crafting a roster capable of not just competing, but winning championships. Amongst high-profile moves and strategic foresight, one underrated acquisition on March 14, 2023 is now appearing to pay off significantly.

Building a Championship Team

Kolb’s tenure as GM has been marked by significant strides to turn the Liberty into contenders from the bottom up. He has made pivotal moves like acquiring Betnijah Laney-Hamilton in 2021, drafting Sabrina Ionescu—the first #1 overall pick in franchise history in 2020—and becoming the first GM in WNBA history to bring three All-Stars from the previous season onto the same roster, including two MVPs: Jonquel Jones and Breanna Stewart in 2023.

Kolb further solidified the team’s future by securing contract extensions for key players, including Betnijah, Kayla Thornton, and Sabrina Ionescu, ensuring they would remain together for another shot at a title which they were able to secure this past season.

Additionally, Kolb cored Breanna Stewart and successfully re-signed Jonquel Jones, who went on to become this year’s WNBA Finals MVP—a move that Kolb identified as a priority back in October 2023. Among his most significant acquisitions was the offseason signing of Leonie Fiebich, who quickly emerged as a rising star and fan favorite, further enhancing the Liberty’s roster depth.

His efforts culminated in an impressive accolade: being named WNBA Basketball Executive of the Year after constructing the winningest team in the franchise’s 27-year history in 2023. That year, the Liberty not only captured the Commissioner’s Cup Trophy but also celebrated the franchise's first championship in 2024.

Creating a Family Culture

Kolb’s vision extends beyond assembling star-studded talent. He has consistently emphasized the importance of creating a cohesive family atmosphere within the roster and organization. While some critics viewed his acquisition of a powerhouse trio as a rushed attempt to win immediately, Kolb and the players have proven that their unity reflects a shared goal: bringing a championship to New York and maintaining that competitive edge for years to come.

Navigating Expansion Challenges

As the league expands, challenges arise. The Liberty recently faced a significant change when Kayla Thornton, a key forward, was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the much-anticipated expansion draft. The news surprised many fans, but Kolb was prepared for any outcome, showcasing his knack for strategic planning.

“It is incredibly difficult to say goodbye to a player like KT who contributed to the New York Liberty in so many ways over these past two years, including our franchise’s first-ever championship,” Kolb remarked, highlighting Thornton's integral role within the organization. He added, “We look forward to celebrating her on May 27 during her return to Barclays Center with open arms, where she’ll receive her well-earned championship ring.”

A Calculated Risk: Signing Rebekah Gardner

In anticipation of such changes, Kolb had made a calculated decision the previous March by signing guard Rebekah Gardner. At the time, many fans questioned the move, as Gardner was recovering from a torn Achilles sustained while playing overseas. The Liberty acquired her rights from the Chicago Sky in exchange for their 2025 and 2026 second-round draft picks. While some viewed this trade as risky, Kolb recognized the potential upside.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Rebekah to New York and support her recovery process,” Kolb said after the acquisition. “She has shown tremendous perseverance throughout her career, and in tandem with our talented performance staff, we are confident she will be positioned to have the best opportunity at a full recovery as we target the 2025 season for her return.”

Long-Term Benefits of Gardner’s Acquisition

Kolb’s belief in the Liberty’s world-class rehabilitation facilities, especially the Hospital for Special Surgery—renowned for treating elite athletes—allowed him to pursue this opportunity confidently. By securing Gardner, Kolb ensured that the Liberty could oversee her rehabilitation from start to finish. Moreover, because she was injured, Gardner wouldn’t occupy a roster spot during the 2024 season, permitting the team to maintain flexibility.

Throughout the season, the Liberty opted to carry just 11 players on their roster, which allowed for better cap management. This decision ultimately paved the way for the signing of undrafted guard Jaylyn Sherrod to a rest of season contract, further deepening the team’s bench.

Gardner, a talented third-year player, previously averaged 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.4 steals per game with the Chicago Sky, showcasing impressive shooting percentages—53.5% from the field and 38.3% from beyond the arc during her rookie campaign. Additionally, her playoff experience, having participated in eight postseason games, makes her an invaluable asset as the Liberty look to sustain their competitive edge.

Looking Ahead

As Kolb navigates the challenges of roster adjustments and expansion, it is clear that his foresight in signing Gardner may turn out to be a pivotal move for the Liberty. While losing Thornton leaves a gap, Gardner possesses the potential to fill that void as a high-caliber role player who can shoot efficiently and play tough defense—traits similar to those that Thornton brought to the team.

Conclusion

Making bold decisions can often attract criticism. However, Jonathon Kolb’s ability to see the bigger picture and make strategic choices, such as acquiring Rebekah Gardner, demonstrates a remarkable understanding of both the present and the future of the Liberty. As the team continues to evolve, Kolb's vision may just be the key to securing the franchise's continued success in the years to come. With this blend of strategy and foresight, the New York Liberty are not just poised for now; they are preparing for a bright and competitive future.
